Hot Air » Gallup: Health care not a top priority for Americans

Consider this just another piece of evidence for Democratic cluelessness in the 111th Congress. While Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid have spent almost a year haggling over a deeply unpopular bill to overhaul the American health-care system, Gallup says voters don’t consider that a top priority. Not surprisingly, that goes to unemployment, and the economy follows a close second: (more)

President Obama's plan to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan in July 2011 has emboldened terrorists and increased distrust of U.S. intentions in the region, Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Thursday. "The administration's withdrawal date was music to the ears of the militants and terrorists," Qureshi said in an exclusive interview with The Washington Examiner. "This sends the wrong signal, and you will have chaos and confusion in Afghanistan if this comes to fru... (more)

I’ll level with you. I think this is huge, but the procedural chicanery has gotten so convoluted that I can’t be sure anymore. Could mean nothing. Or, it could be something close to Waterloo. The Senate Parliamentarian has ruled that President Barack Obama must sign Congress’ original health care reform bill before the Senate can act on a companion reconciliation package, senior GOP sources said Thursday. A non-partisan study finds that ObamaCare will raise taxes on the middle class, a direct violation of his campaign promise not to raise taxes on anyone making less that $250,000 per year. When gas was $4 a gallon and Senator Obama was campaigning for the Presidency, he said was willing to support new offshore oil drilling. Now that the election is a year behind us and gas is under $3 a gallon, Obama is quietly banning new offshore drilling for the rest of his term. The Obama administration’s six-month delay in approving new offshore drilling leases in federal waters will become a new three-year ban, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar quietly told reporters last Friday. Brown's voting for cloture on the $140 billion spending bill earlier this week, although he voted against the bill on the merits, also was worrisome (although Brown may be on to something, since one left wing blog is worried that that spending bill may doom the ability to pass Obamacare because the spending bill uses revenue offsets which are needed for the health care bill). I went looking for the full poll behind a claim that 68% of Americans oppose passing ObamaCare without Republican support. Via this article, I came across this 42 page pdf file with the poll data. From Rasmussen on March 1st, current Party ID numbers stand at 35% D, 32% R, and 33% I. The AP-GFK poll uses 45% D, 34% R, and 20% I. It's possible ObamaCare's numbers are even worse than the AP-GFK poll suggests, but beyond that, there's even more troubling information inside. Obama is completely out of ste... (more)

ABC News' Matthew Jaffe reports: Only hours after the Obama administration announced a record monthly budget deficit of $220 billion in February, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner was beating back criticism from Republican lawmakers railing against the rising amount of red ink. “It just defies common sense for this administration to pretend that you’re paying any attention at all to deficit reduction,” Rep. John Culberson, R-TX, told Geithner. “It doesn’t square with reality.” (more)

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. has presented the rebuttal argument in Obama v. Supreme Court. Roberts's remarks Tuesday protested the timing of President Obama's State of the Union disapproval of the court's decision in a major campaign finance case. It has begun Round Two in what appears to be a growing inclination from the White House and Democrats in Congress to criticize the court's decisions. (more)

While economists got out their pom-poms last week to celebrate the news that official unemployment is only 9.7 percent (while skillfully ignoring the increase in underemployment and the 40 percent of the unemployed who have been that way for six months or more), Americans weren’t buying their routine. A new Rasmussen poll shows that despite official optimism, 34 percent of Americans think unemployment will be worse in a year. Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.) is taking his first big political punches from Democrats, a sign that the rising GOP star has graduated to the heavyweight division. The 40-year-old Ryan, with barely a speck of gray in his jet-black hair, has emerged as a talking point for President Barack Obama and a potential presidential contender for Republicans. His plan to balance the federal budget with a mix of proposals to partially privatize Medicare and Social Security has become Democrats’ piñata. (more)
