As the White House signals that it is willing to move forward on a health reform plan without a public option, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) sent a strong message Thursday evening: not so fast. In her strongest statement yet, Pelosi said that any bill "without a strong public option will not pass the House": (more)

Bluegrass Pundit: Protester whose finger was bitten off speaks out on Neil Cavuto

The 65 year old man, whose "pinkie" finger was bitten off in a scuffle with a deranged MoveOn.org protester, spoke about the indecent to Neil Cavuto. Doctors weren't able to reattach his severed finger end. He isn't angry and has no plans to sue. The extended interview is very interesting. Bill Rice sounds a lot more like a "tea party" protester than someone focused on just the health care issue. Under the circumstances, I am not sure I would be as gracious as Mr. Rice. (more)

Reality Continues To Stalk Democrat's Economic Policy (Wizbang)

Sentiment might improve if Americans could identify some evidence of pro growth policy in the initiatives of President Obama and his Democratic cohorts in Congress. Unfortunately, the mish mash of policy band aides like cash for clunkers and the soon to expire first time home buyer tax incentive are short term fixes that do nothing to motivate employers to make long term investment plans that are necessary for sustained employment recovery. After watching his poll numbers plummet to new lows, President Obama appears to be ready to throw the "public option" government run health care plan under the bus. Politico is reporting Obama is going to get more involved in health care reform after the August break. He is going to specify what he want in a bill, but he will not insist on a "public option" plan. This change of course may help Obama get some kind of "face saving" health care legislation to a vote, but his already fading popularity with D... (more)

Obviously, Obama gets to make his own call here. All one can do is guess. But if you look at the dynamics as they are shaping up, it's difficult to predict that Obama opts to see Afghanistan through as a full scale war. The newly appointed head of NATO and U.S. forces is said to urge an expansion of Afghan security forces and a revamped counterinsurgency strategy that focuses on making Afghan citizens feel safer. The changes called for here are so significant, if Obama signs on, Bush gets removed from ... (more)

Thursday, September 03, 2009 11:37:07 AM GMT Monday, August 31, 2009 11:38:57 AM GMT
WASHINGTON -- The problem of the burgeoning government debt is mainly political, but the adverse consequences may be economic. The trouble is that we don't know what those consequences may be, when they may occur, or even whether they will occur. Without some impending calamity, politicians of both parties recoil from doing anything unpopular that might bring the budget into balance over, say, the next six or seven years. The idea of anticipating and pre-empting future problems is not on their agenda. (more)
