WASHINGTON – The typical family would be spared higher taxes from the House Democratic plan to overhaul health care, and their low-income neighbors could come out ahead. Their wealthy counterparts, however, face big tax increases that could eventually hit future generations of taxpayers who are less wealthy. (more)

The technical term for the following video is “busting his chops.” Joe Scarborough provided a wonderful satire of Keith Olbermann’s 2008 election-night bias on this morning’s edition of Morning Joe.  A partial transcript follows the video, which really must be watched for the full effect. Attaboy, Joe.  This sort of thing makes up for your left-of-center moments. JOE SCARBOROUGH: And by the way, if the Republican Party, or if conservatives are so extreme, why are all of Barack Obama’s candidates... (more)

CNN, which created the all-news cable network almost 30 years ago, hit a new competitive low with its prime-time programs in October, with three of its four programs between 7 and 11 p.m. finishing fourth and last among the cable news networks. It was the first time that the programs had ever performed that poorly against their news network competitors. October was also the third month in the last year that CNN as a network finished fourth behind the three other cable news networks in prime time with ... (more)

A president must take great care with the allotment of his precious time. Yesterday, this from Jim Geraghty: We Can See Which Fight He's More Interested In Obama's usual three-hour session discussing Afghanistan with advisers will be cut down to an hour and fifteen minutes today, so he can leave in time to attend two Democratic fundraisers in Florida. This will be the eighth and ninth fundraisers Obama has attended since General McChrystal submitted his request for additional troops. They say you... (more)

WASHINGTON - A proposal for government-backed health insurance is close to gaining the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate and probably will be in overhaul legislation, a Senate Democratic leader said Sunday. A proposal for the public option that is gaining wide support would allow states to choose not to participate in a government-run insurance program, said New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, the third-ranking Senate Democrat. The "opt out" proposal is drawing support from many liberal and moderate senator... (more)

Give power to consumers, not government - Anne Kim and Jim Kessler - POLITICO.com

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 12:09:52 PM GMT Monday, October 19, 2009 10:48:27 AM GMT
The new consumer agency proposed in financial regulatory reform could be a big win for an American middle class pummeled by the financial crisis. Yet proponents risk the resentment of the very middle-class Americans they want to help. By largely framing the debate as one of industry versus government, supporters of a consumer financial protection agency run the risk of sidelining consumers instead of engaging them and, moreover, enlarging the controversy over government’s size and scope. President Bush: Graceful Invitation to President Obama | The Moderate Voice

MSM often plays the same chord way too often: the dischord. There are far more stories each day that unfold with regard, and often enough, authentic fondness. A colleague from Texas A&M forwarded me a copy of this letter today, from the former President Bush speaking about welcoming President Obama to a special event on Aggie turf. You’ll probably note a couple pointed words indicating President Bush’s stance on Obama being President. (more)

The Chamber will spend tens of millions of dollars and buy advertising nationwide to persuade the American public that its agenda -- low taxes, open markets, and loose regulation -- are crucial elements of a job recovery. The new television spots, previewed for staff and press at the launch event Wednesday, celebrate small American entrepreneurs and argue that government intervention will not spur permanent job growth. The Obama administration’s $50 billion plan to curb foreclosures isn’t big or fast enough to keep up with the growing problem, a congressional watchdog concludes in a report being released Friday. “It increasingly appears that [the foreclosure program] is targeted at the housing crisis as it existed six months ago, rather than as it exists right now,” the report warns.
