Tuesday, February 09, 2010 5:52:47 PM GMT Tuesday, February 09, 2010 12:49:18 PM GMT
When U.S. small businesses grow, U.S. jobs are created, and do we ever need those now. But in order to grow, small businesses need credit -- loans -- which have been really hard to come by lately. Hoping to help make more credit available to small businesses, President Obama has proposed a plan that would give banking industry bailout money paid back by the big banks, to the nation's 8,000 or so small community banks to be used for small business lending. Friday, May 29, 2009 12:37:48 AM GMT Thursday, May 28, 2009 5:44:54 PM GMT
April 30th, 2009, during his 100th Day speech: “a Recovery Act that has already saved or created over 150,000 jobs” May 27th 2009, during his 100th day of the Recovery Act speech: “the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has saved or created nearly 150,000 jobs” [all emphasis mine] So, in the last 4 weeks, not only has the Stimulus Package NOT created (or saved, which I can’t fathom how they’d calculate) one single new job, it now appears to be actively destroying jobs, since the number went from... OK, I promise this is the last post on lawmaker reactions to the passing of Jack Kemp. But here is a statement from President Obama put out from the White House moments ago: "Jack Kemp's commitment to public service and his passion for politics influenced not only the direction of his party, but his country. From his tenure as a Buffalo congressman to his ascent in national politics, Jack Kemp was a man who could fiercely advocate his own beliefs and principles while also remembering the lessons he le... Fox News .. being the evil right-wing network that it is ... has actually turned down yet another PrezBO does Prime Time press conference. The administration requested that networks air his 100 day address to the nation during primetime on Wednesday, and Fox News turned it down. Man does this have the liberal thongs in a wad! Politico reports that House Minority Whip Eric Cantor and President Obama have declared war on each other. The subject? Bipartisanship. I know, it is so ironic you’d think I’m joking. I’m not: But headed for a meeting with the president at the White House Thursday, Cantor and other House Republican leaders couldn’t resist picking at the scab. They sent Obama a letter praising him for his “common-sense idea” that “Washington can work together for the American people instead of for political parties” —... (more)

GIBBS: I -- again, I think I'd point you to the comments that the president made today that a determination of who -- of whether a law was broken or who broke a law was not a determination that would be made inside the confines of the White House. More Obama backtracking that will not surprise you, via ABC News: President Obama suggested today that it remained a possibility that the Justice Department might bring charges against officials of the Bush administration who devised harsh interrogation policies that some see as torture. SPIN METER: Obama's latest budget-tightening effort hardly makes a dime's worth of difference - Yahoo! Finance

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Cut a latte or two out of your annual budget and you've just done as much belt-tightening as President Barack Obama asked of his Cabinet on Monday. The thrifty measures Obama ordered for federal agencies are the equivalent of asking a family that spends $60,000 in a year to save $6. Obama made his push for frugality the subject of his first Cabinet meeting, ensuring it would command the capital's attention. It also set off outbursts of mental math and scribbled calculations as po... (more)

WASHINGTON – Days after releasing top-secret memos that detailed the CIA's use of simulated drowning while interrogating terror suspects, President Barack Obama went to the spy agency's Virginia headquarters on Monday to defend his decision and bolster the morale of its employees. "I acted primarily because of the exceptional circumstances that surrounded these memos, particularly the fact that so much of the information was public," Obama said. Is This A Joke Headline? 'Obama to Order $100 Million in Budget Cuts' | NewsBusters.org

What happens when the White House publicity points collide with hard fiscal facts? Which side will win, the spin or the facts? See this Washington Post headline: "Obama to Order $100 Million in Budget Cuts." Is this a joke headline? Isn't this "order" totally swamped by all of the spending Obama and the Democrats in Congress have approved? The deficit for March just set a monthly record of $192.3 billion, with a B. How is $100 million more than a rounding error, or a day of interest on the Obama stimulus... (more)

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) on Monday compared President Obama to former President Jimmy Carter for friendly gestures toward Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Gingrich said on “Fox & Friends”: “Frankly, this does look a lot like Jimmy Carter. Carter tried weakness, and the world got tougher and tougher, because the predators, the aggressors, the anti-Americans, the dictators – when they sense weakness, they all start pushing ahead. “And the reports out of Pakistan are very alarming... Political Punch - Today's Q for O - President Obama's Cuba embargo change in view from 2004

TAPPER: Thank you, Mr. President. You have heard from a lot of Latin American leaders here who want the U.S. to lift the embargo against Cuba. You've said that you think it's important leverage to not lift it. But in 2004, you did support lifting the embargo. You said, "It's failed to provide the source of raising standards of living and squeeze the innocent" and "it's time for us to acknowledge that this policy has failed." I'm wondering, what made you change your mind about the embargo? (more)

A day after President Obama pledged a new future in Washington’s relations with Cuba, Latin American leaders insisted at a summit meeting in Trinidad that the future is now. That message followed the president throughout the day on Saturday and even upstaged a photo-op with Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada, when a reporter asked Mr. Obama whether he was taking tips from Canada’s policy of open engagement with Havana. “I take tips from Canada on a lot of things,” he said with a smile, and kept wal...
