Spending on health care during 2008 increased at the lowest rate since 1960, according to a new government report. But hold the celebrations. The same report showed that despite the slower growth rate, health care spending continued to outpace the nation's overall economic growth. (more)

Health Care Reform Bills: To Provide or Impose?

published 71 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes ago posted by govinfogovinfo 71 days, 17 hours, 18 minutes ago
Monday, December 28, 2009 11:21:10 PM GMT Monday, December 28, 2009 12:14:36 PM GMT
If you want health insurance but cannot afford it, the health care reform bills being considered by Congress will "provide" it to you. But if you simply do not want health insurance, health care reform will "impose" it on you. Both the Senate and House health care reform bills strive to make sure all Americans have health insurance. The differences in how they do that are important to you. (more)

We're closer than ever to winning a historic victory on health care. I should know: I served as Secretary of Labor under President Clinton during the last health care fight. And I'm sure that this time around we're within reach of passing a real health care reform bill—one that includes a public health insurance option. Unfortunately, some conservatives in the Senate are still pushing a "trigger" plan that would kill the public option through indefinite delay. (more)

It's unfortunate that GBA's Lynn Mueller decides to stick himself in the past throughout his entire column, starting out with a quote from former president Abraham Lincoln - using the famous "Of the People" quote to defend anti-government. (more)

Back in May, the Senate Finance Committee considered the possibility of helping to pay for health care reform by imposing a federal tax on soda and other sugary drinks. Like health care reform legislation itself, the soda tax proposal has slowed down at the federal level, but the City of San Francisco just can't wait. (more)

In his speech to Congress promoting his health care reform plan, President Obama stated, “Nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have.” While that is true, you also need to understand that nothing in the plan prohibits your employer from changing your coverage and thus, your doctor. No 'Death Panels' in Health Care Reform Bill

Certainly the scariest rumor surrounding the health care reform bill holds that the bill would establish mandatory government "death panels" assigned to encourage elderly Americans to opt-out of life extending treatment in order to reduce Medicare expenses. This rumor is false. (more)

Health Care Reform, Abortion and the Truth

If you were thinking that either side of the abortion debate had forgotten about the health care reform bill, forget it. Anti-abortion (pro-life) groups are claiming the bill absolutely requires the government to pay for abortions. Pro-abortion (pro-choice) groups say that it absolutely does not. That leaves quite a wide gap where the truth can be hiding. (more)

Appearing Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sec. of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius suggested that the Obama administration might be willing to consider nonprofit insurance cooperatives as an alternative to its controversial government-run public insurance plan. Nonprofit cooperatives are far from a new idea. In fact, you may already belong to one. (more)

Everybody who has a job has health insurance. Wrong. In fact, the Department of Labor reports that only about 70 percent of U.S. workers in private industry have access to employer provided medical care benefits and only 25 percent of the lowest wage earners – those with average hourly wages in the lowest 10 percent of all private industry wages – had such access. Support for the health care reform bill is eroding on both sides of Congress after the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that the bill intended to cover about 97 percent of the U.S. population with health insurance would actually raise health care costs, rather than lowering them. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) recently used this talking point himself in arguing against a public option for the National Review. Yesterday, however, DeMint appeared to inadvertently offer an example that demonstrates that the notion that the public plan would drive out competition is false. (more)

Kudlow - We Can't Afford a 'Public' Health Plan

published 297 days, 16 hours, 46 minutes ago posted by Upstate09Upstate09 298 days, 8 hours, 32 minutes ago

Does anybody really believe that adding 50 million people to the public health-care rolls will not cost the government more money? About $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion more? At least. So let's be serious when evaluating President Obama's goal of universal health care, and the idea that it's a cost-cutter. Can't happen. Won't happen. Costs are going to explode. Think of it: Can anyone name a federal program that ever cut costs for anything? Let's not forget that the existing Medicare system is roughly... (more)

Its All in Your Head by The Editors on National Review Online

The most important asset that President Obama has in his effort to transform health-care policy is the consensus inside Washington that he will succeed. As long as the major interest groups believe that a liberal health-care bill is going to pass, they will work with its sponsors rather than incur their wrath. As long as Republicans believe a bill will pass, they will offer modest amendments instead of going all-out in opposition. This consensus has not been conjured out of thin air. The Democrats hav...
