Moderate Democrats, coping with the electoral fallout of President Barack Obama’s grand and ground-down legislative ambitions, have a message for their leaders: Stop supersizing us. If the first year of Obama’s term was dominated by the so-called Big Bang push for enormous, politically risky initiatives — the stimulus, cap and trade and health care — Year Two is fast shaping up to be year of small ball, retrenchment and backlash. As health care legislation staggered erratically through Congress this year, something happened to the biggest domestic policy debate of a generation. It turned small—shrouded in arcane arguments over a “robust public option” versus co-ops, whether government funds could indirectly subsidize abortions, and even the state share of Medicaid payments in Nebraska. Now the debate is about to turn big again. (more)

Representative Louise M. Slaughter of New York has written an op-ed for CNN.com that urges Senators to scrap a controversial healthcare bill. Echoing complaints among many liberals, Slaughter criticizes Senate Democrats for scrapping the public plan option, which Democrats -- including President Obama -- have long argued would provide competition for insurance companies and reduce the cost of coverage. Although largely unheralded amid rancor on other issues, the Senate healthcare reform package includes a provision that would directly cut the profit currently collected by insurers. The Senate legislation contains a measure that would require health insurance companies to put up to 85 percent of premiums (85 percent in the large group market, 80 percent in the small and individual group markets) toward actual health services, not administrative costs, marketing campaigns, or profits, according to a s...
