Remember last fall when the CEOs of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler flew on corporate jets to Washington, D.C., to plead for a taxpayer bailout? The resulting bad publicity prompted GM to try to prevent the public from tracking its planes in databases compiled by the Federal Aviation Administration. (more)

Althouse: "Lawyers for the Obama administration warned the court Monday against standing in the way. They said Chrysler was losing $100 million a day."

Okay. But, now, wait. $100 million. I forget. That's a lot of money, right? We're supposed to think that when we're supposed to think that. But at other times, $100 billion is hardly worth noticing. Those holding 92 percent of the $6.9 billion in secured debt already approved a deal that would give bondholders $2 billion. Together, Indiana pension funds said they had $42 million invested in Chrysler, less than 1 percent of its secured debt. They paid about 43 cents on the dollar to acquire their share a... (more)

The Supreme Court, in an order signed by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, has stopped the sale of Chrysler to Fiat and the bankruptcy plan engineered by the White House. No details are available quite yet on the story, but I will be watching for updates on the wires and blogs. Ginsburg stopping the sale, though … that’s interesting in and of itself. (more)

Michigan Messenger » Appeals court denies injunction in Chrysler sale; emergency appeal filed with Supreme Court

Monday, June 08, 2009 6:10:40 PM GMT Monday, June 08, 2009 11:45:00 AM GMT
As we noted on Friday, a group of Indiana pension funds had filed a case with the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals seeking an injunction to prevent the sale of Chrysler’s assets to a new Chrysler/Fiat partnership, claiming that the bankruptcy case violated the law. The appeals court rejected those arguments and now an appeal has been filed with the Supreme Court... (more)

Congressional Democrats Discover Dealergate (Wizbang)

That smell emanating from the Chrysler dealer closings has finally reached a level that forces prominent Democrats to complain. Yesterday House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, Rep. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. Daniel Maffei (all Democrats) sent a letter to President Obama asking for a "compelling justification" for the closings. We are writing to express our concerns about General Motors' and Chrysler's decision to close profitable automobile dealerships across the country, and urge you to ask GM and Chrysl... (more)

Hmmm: Chrysler dealers shut down in Obama bankruptcy are mostly Republican?

I’m skeptical that this is as bad as it looks — it’d be politically suicidal, for no benefit greater than petty revenge — but consider it your must-read of the day. Don’t stop before the updates either or you’ll miss profitable dealers scratching their heads trying to figure out what mysterious sin they could have committed to warrant termination. (more)

Furor grows over partisan car dealer closings | Washington Examiner

Evidence appears to be mounting that the Obama administration has systematically targeted for closing Chrysler dealers who contributed to Repubicans. What started earlier this week as mainly a rumbling on the Right side of the Blogosphere has gathered some steam today with revelations that among the dealers being shut down are a GOP congressman and closing of competitors to a dealership chain partly owned by former Clinton White House chief of staff Mack McLarty. The basic issue raised here is this: H... (more)

Chrysler Conservatives Axed - Only Blogs Investigate | NewsBusters.org

The blogosphere has, once again, proven itself a worthy investigator.  Unsurprisingly, that same investigatory spirit is nearly nonexistent in the mainstream media. This morning on Fox and Friends, Michelle Malkin gave an interview on a story that she and HotAir have been following for several days (video embedded to the right).  Apparently, many of the Chrysler dealers that have been chosen for closing have made a habit of donating money to Republicans, or nobody at all – and those who donate to Demo... The investigation into how the apparent redistribution of Chrysler dealer franchises we reported on here and here continues. Joey Smith, Gateway Pundit, Reboot Congress and Libertarian Republican are just some of the new media warriors on the case. What the intrepid bloggers are sifting through is the toxic fallout from the Obama administration’s journey to the dark side of corporatist policy - economic fascism: From an economic perspective, fascism meant (and means) an interventionist industrial policy... Gateway Pundit: Hope, Change & Marxism: Did Obama Target GOP Donors In Chrysler Dealer Closings? (Video)

Today's Hope and Change-- Doug Ross looked at the possibility that the Obama Administration may have targeted GOP donors in deciding which Chrysler dealerships would have to close their doors. Doug noted that every single dealer he checked out except one were either GOP donors or donated to Obama's rivals in the democratic primary. UPDATE: Chrysler Dealership owner Jim Anderer was on with Neil Cavuto. Jim's dealership is being shut down. Anderer noted that the closings didn't make any sense and... (more)

In my WSJ column on Chrylser last week I asked: Chrysler -- or more accurately, its unionized workers -- may be helped in the short run. But we need to ask how eager lenders will be to offer new credit to General Motors knowing that the value of their investment could be diminished or destroyed by government to enrich a politically favored union. We also need to ask how eager hedge funds will be to participa... (more)

BREAKING: Chrysler 'rejects' 789 dealers nationwide, moves to pare dealers down by 25% by June 9

Chrysler has just announced that it will 'reject' some 789 of its dealerships by June 9 as it works to downsize through Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring. That represents a 25% cut in its dealer networks, leaving 2,392 Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge dealers to carry on if the automaker is able to successfully emerge from bankruptcy with its new partner, Fiat. Auburn Hills reiterated that it will be "business as usual" with its entire dealership body throughout its bankruptcy proceedings, with plans to ho... (more)

Obama Auto Task Force Halves Chrysler's Marketing Budget - Advertising Age - News

DETROIT (AdAge.com) -- Chrysler wanted to spend $134 million in advertising over the nine weeks it's expected to be in bankruptcy -- the U.S. Treasury's auto-industry task force gave it half that. So if GM, which is wrestling with the possibility of a Chapter 11 filing itself, is wondering how much influence the task force will have over marketing, the answer is: plenty. However, transcripts from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Southern District of New York, where the Chrysler case is being heard, prov... (more)

Pajamas Media » Is Big Auto Really the Answer?

After striking a deal to acquire a major stake in Chrysler, Italy’s Fiat now wants to gobble up GM’s European operation under terms that include government subsidies. And in Chrysler’s case, a quick bankruptcy would relieve Fiat of a few troubling obligations. If Fiat is successful in both these bold ventures, its auto production could increase from 2.2-million vehicles to 5.5-million per year, making it an automaker of impressive scale. But would this dramatic growth be a win for Fiat? There’s plenty of... (more)

Chrysler's dissident lender group withdraws objections

There was a minority group of some 20 Chrysler lenders that were fighting the repayment arrangements Chrysler was trying to make before Chrysler declared bankruptcy. Led by Oppenheimer and Stairway Capital, they were owed $2.9 billion and didn't feel they were getting all they could. After Chrysler declared bankruptcy the group continued to fight the repayment arrangements, saying they were owed more remuneration as holders of secured debt. Well, last week was sound and fury, this week it's in with a... (more)
