The People’s Bank of China said it will raise the reserve ratios that banks in the country must keep to .5%. It is the second time that it has increased the ratio in a year. The action is viewed by most economists as a way to head off a sharp increase in inflation caused by lax loan practices and the nation’s $585 billion stimulus program. China has posted increases in food and commodities prices. The expansion of its manufacturing sector has also accelerated sharply. The value of equities and real es... (more)

Google has found itself caught in the middle of a free speech battle. According to the New York Times, the Goog made an arrangement in 2006 with the Chinese government to censor its Chinese search results on specified banned topics. But a lot of critics are upset with the company for ever making such a deal and “abetting a system” that restricts what people can search for and read online. (more)

As I posted earlier, the key elements in "green" technology are rare metals mined mostly in China. The green economy envisioned by the Obama administration as the means by which we will grow "green jobs" and lessen our dependence on foreign oil in fact simply puts us at the mercy of the Chinese. Now those fears are coming to fruition, as China is about to restrict the sale of these metals, as reported in The Independent newspaper in Britain: Industry sources have told The Independent that China cou... Buried amid its astonishing annual growth rate, even in the recession, is the sad story of China’s socialist sector, a huge and perennial drag on its economy. The failure of government control amid the success of private initiative is a story that President Obama would do well to study as he brings government control and management to the automobile and banking industries in the United States. Some investors are wary of U.S. assets because the budget deficit is projected to reach $1.75 trillion in the year ending Sept. 30 from last year’s $455 billion, the Congressional Budget Office says. “The bigger picture is people are worried there are too many Treasuries, and that no one is even making a pretense of getting the fiscal deficit under control,” said Francis Beddington, co-founder of Insparo Asset Management, which oversees about $140 million in London... The federal government is spending $2.6 million to make sure prostitutes in China drink less on the job. That's the goal of a five-year study, bankrolled by the National Institutes of Health, designed to help lower HIV infections among China's "female sex workers," who are referred to in the study as "FSWs." Researchers will visit 100 houses of ill repute -- a whole hamlet of harlots -- to collect data on 700 prostitutes and 150 pimps and madams, referred to as "gatekeepers" in the study's sterile ...
