President Obama's plan to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan in July 2011 has emboldened terrorists and increased distrust of U.S. intentions in the region, Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Thursday. "The administration's withdrawal date was music to the ears of the militants and terrorists," Qureshi said in an exclusive interview with The Washington Examiner. So far it’s mostly American citizens of Haitian descent, but we need to get emergency visas for some of the Haitians themselves—especially the orphans. It seems clever to send the planes to the island with supplies, and then back here with human beings who may need better medical care than can be provided there. (more)

Obama seems to have a profound sense that the stakes are greater than the latest poll numbers. The strategy he is pursuing is yet to be fully defined, but it appears that he is taking into consideration the strategic advice of the military rather than the strategic advice of his pollsters. Whether Obama picks a good strategy and whether he shows the determination to see it through remains to be seen. (more)

Obviously, Obama gets to make his own call here. All one can do is guess. But if you look at the dynamics as they are shaping up, it's difficult to predict that Obama opts to see Afghanistan through as a full scale war. The newly appointed head of NATO and U.S. forces is said to urge an expansion of Afghan security forces and a revamped counterinsurgency strategy that focuses on making Afghan citizens feel safer. The changes called for here are so significant, if Obama signs on, Bush gets removed from ... (more)
