Saturday, August 08, 2009 12:00:11 AM GMT Friday, August 07, 2009 5:17:02 PM GMT
For the first time since 2007, AIG on Friday claimed a profit. The insurance giant reported second-quarter net income of over $1.8 billion. That's still just a fraction of the $180 billion that AIG received as part of a government bailout in 2008. AIG's chief executive claimed that the profits demonstrated "stabilization," while acknowledging that parts of the company were still troubled. (more)

AIG, Citibank and other companies have come under a great deal of pressure these past few months and have been accused of all sorts of things. The people who are making these accusations are the same ones who had a whole lot to do with getting them in that predicament (i.e. Barney Frank, Christopher Dodd, etc…). Let’s take a look at what really happened. Up until the fall of 2009, and for years before this, the big banks and other related companies were lending and making a lot of money in consolidati... Mad Money : A list of the lawmakers who lashed out at Wall Street, after taking huge financial sector contributions.

Last week, lawmakers dashed to the podiums of Capitol Hill to condemn AIG and the rest of those bonus-loving scoundrels on Wall Street. But not long before that, some of those same members had been dashing to fundraisers with the very financial bogeymen they were now skewering. Indeed, the line between friend and target is a fine one in Washington, and often the line moves from month to month. Now that the AIG bonus scandal has started to wane--many of the payouts have been returned, and it appears the H... (more)

No wonder Senator Christopher Dodd (D-Conn) went wobbly last week when asked about his February amendment ratifying hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses to executives at insurance giant AIG. Dodd has been one of the company's favorite recipients of campaign contributions. But it turns out that Senator Dodd's wife has also benefited from past connections to AIG as well. (more)

Cuomo To AIG: Your Money Or Your Name | FinkelBlog

Listen to Andrew Cuomo’s statement [which sounds strangely like a ransom message], aired on Morning Joe today, about the decision of a number of the AIG bonus babies to return the dough: If the’re doing “the right thing,” it’s at the point of a public-disclosure gun. And don’t you love Cuomo’s concluding statement: “If a person returns the money, I don’t think there’s a public interest in disclosing their name”? Translation: your money or your name. (more)

Bloomberg: AIG bonus brouhaha distracting from 'real issues'

Thursday, March 26, 2009 11:15:51 AM GMT Monday, March 23, 2009 11:41:20 AM GMT
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," said that leaders should not get so caught up in public outrage at AIG—which he called "publicity issues"—to divert attention from more fundamental economic threats. "We've gotta stop focusing on some of the publicity issues and focus on the real issue here," Bloomberg said. "We’ve gotta get the banking system liquid again and get them loaning. We’ve gotta get the people being willing to spend. We’ve gotta have business downsize or... (more)

Yesterday, the House passed a 90% tax on bonuses given to people with household incomes over $250,000 that received more than $5 billion in TARP funds. The big name is "AIG" but this also includes Fannie and Freddy. In addition, Andrew Cuomo has a list of those individuals who received the payouts. He is not yet releasing the list as there have been death threats against those who were "outed" in certain publications in New York, Connecticut and London. Charles Rangel, Norah O'Donnell Spar Over AIG Bonuses

Just now on MSNBC, Representative Charles Rangel and Norah O'Donnell got into it pretty hot and heavy over the AIG bonuses, and what could have prevented the fiasco that Congress is trying to step out of today. It would seem that Rangel came on presuming that he'd get to talk about his tax seizure bill - which recently passed the House by a 328-93 vote. O'Donnell began the conversation by asking why Rangel wrote this bill mere days after averring that the tax code should not be used "as a weapon" for... (more)

Congressional Democrats took aim at the Obama administration Wednesday, blaming the president’s economic team for creating a loophole that allowed AIG to pay its employees millions of dollars in bonuses and then not doing enough to stop the bonuses when it could. And their warp-speed effort to get the money back made it clear that congressional Democrats don’t think the White House is moving fast enough to solve the problem now. In an interview with CNN Wednesday evening, Senate Banking Committee... (more)

Little Green Footballs - Will Obama, McCain, and Dodd Return Their AIG Bonuses?

As politicians on both sides of the aisle make populist hay out of the AIG bonuses scandal, ABC News asks: Will Obama, McCain, Dodd Return Contributions From AIG Employees? AIG employees kept doling out donations to politicians, including presidential candidate Barack Obama, after getting bailed out with federal funds last year, raising the question whether those politicians will now return the money. AIG executives gave more than $630,000 during the 2008 political cycle even as the company was fal... (more)

Treasury Officials Trying To Blame AIG Scandal On Dodd

There is a major push underway -- engineered by Obama's Treasury officials, enabled by a mindless media, and amplified by the right-wing press -- to blame Chris Dodd for the AIG bonus payments. That would be perfectly fine if it were true. But it's completely false, and the scheme to heap the blame on him for the AIG bonus payments is based on demonstrable falsehoods. (more)

Reporting from Washington -- Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) today warned the recipients of the $165 million in controversial executive bonuses paid out at American International Group that they should voluntarily return the money or else face a new tax that would confiscate it. In a speech on the Senate floor, Schumer said he and at least eight colleagues are writing to AIG's chief executive officer, Edward Liddy, asking him to recover the bonuses from the employees and threatening congressional action... (CNN) -- As President Obama speaks out on the AIG debacle, he could be setting himself up for trouble, should his administration move forward with additional bailouts. President Obama says he will try to block bonuses for AIG executives. Echoing the sentiment of taxpayers, the president on Monday called the ailing insurance giant's plans to dole out $165 million in bonuses an "outrage" and said he would attempt to block the additional compensation. The furor over bailed-out insurance giant AIG is adding urgency to President Barack Obama’s longtime plan to tighten regulations on financial firms, with an administration plan now set for unveiling next week. The plans will take shape at a hearing by House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who will take the lead on the complex, heavily lobbied issue. NEW YORK — American International Group Inc. used more than $90 billion in federal aid to pay out foreign and domestic banks, some of whom had received their own multibillion-dollar U.S. government bailouts. The embattled insurer's disclosure on Sunday came amid outrage on Capitol Hill over its payment of tens of millions in executive bonuses, and followed demands from lawmakers that the names of trading partners who indirectly benefited from federal aid to AIG be made public. WASHINGTON – Leaders of the White House economic team and the Senate's top Republican bellowed about bonuses at a bailed-out insurance giant and pledged to prevent such payments in the future. From one Sunday talk show to the next, they tore into the contracts that American International Group asserted had to be honored, to the tune of about $165 million and payable to executives by Sunday — part of a larger total payout reportedly valued at $450 million.
