I’ll level with you. I think this is huge, but the procedural chicanery has gotten so convoluted that I can’t be sure anymore. Could mean nothing. Or, it could be something close to Waterloo. The Senate Parliamentarian has ruled that President Barack Obama must sign Congress’ original health care reform bill before the Senate can act on a companion reconciliation package, senior GOP sources said Thursday. "I think the entire debate that's been going on -- For what, a year or so? -- has reached a point where we're glad to hear the president speak out, and say what's on his mind and what he wants us to do, and get the country revved up," Woolsey said during an appearance on MSNBC. "But I don't think it's going to change a lot of minds." (more)

Le·gal In·sur·rec·tion: Scott Brown Still The 41st Vote

Brown's voting for cloture on the $140 billion spending bill earlier this week, although he voted against the bill on the merits, also was worrisome (although Brown may be on to something, since one left wing blog is worried that that spending bill may doom the ability to pass Obamacare because the spending bill uses revenue offsets which are needed for the health care bill). Bluegrass Pundit: Dick Durbin Says Obama Not Telling Truth About Health Care Premiums Going Down Under Obamacare

Thursday, March 11, 2010 1:01:38 PM GMT Thursday, March 11, 2010 12:01:50 AM GMT
President Obama said most peoples health care premiums will go down if Obamacare is passed. President Obama, March 8, 2010: "Our cost-cutting measures mirror most of the proposals in the current Senate bill, which reduces most people’s premiums." Dick Durbin contradicts President Obama. Sen. Dick Durbin, March 10, 2010: "Anyone who would stand before you and say 'well, if you pass health care reform next year's health care premiums are going down,' I don't think is telling the truth. Wednesday, March 10, 2010 1:28:15 PM GMT Tuesday, March 09, 2010 11:20:06 PM GMT
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs acknowledged Tuesday that there is a "disconnect" between the White House and congressional Democrats over a March 18 goal for House passage of healthcare reform. Gibbs said Tuesday the administration expects the House to pass healthcare reform by March 18 even though Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said earlier in the day that the House is not beholden to that deadline. Hoyer downplayed that deadline earlier Tuesday, saying that "none of us has mentione... (more)

According to this three-term Democrat from Kansas City, Pelosi currently has only about 201 health care reform votes. The number needed is 217. Democrats will be very close if Stupak folds. Prime Buzz reported: Congressman Emanuel Cleaver said today on KCUR's "Up to Date" that President Barack Obama doesn't have the votes to pass health care reform in the U.S. House. "We're not at 217," Cleaver said, referring to the number needed to pass the bill. Later, the three-term Democrat from Kansas ... (more)

Dems are aiming to pass health care legislation, once and for all, by Easter recess. But for all their optimistic talk, one thing remains clear: They don't have the votes just yet. Then again, they don't have a bill yet, either. The first step of what promises to be an arduous process will come when Dem leaders unveil the package of proposed measures to fix the legislation and make it more palatable to some House lawmakers. Once the Senate demonstrates it is able to pass the bill via reconciliation, t... (more)

Legislation was launched on Wednesday to repeal the 17-year-old policy that prohibits openly gay men and women from serving in the U.S. military. A group of six Democratic senators — headed by Sen. Well, you know the bar has sunk pretty low when negative territory is considered "good news" on the jobs front. Here is video today of Democrat Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid saying: "Today is a big day in America. Only 36,000 people lost their jobs today, which is really good." Unemployment stayed at 9.7% in the latest numbers. This "good news" from Democrats who promised unemployment would not surpass 8% when they were selling the need for their $787 Billion "Stimulus" boondoggle giveaway plan. (more)

ThinkProgress has “learned from Hill sources that newly elected Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) will be added to the Senate Armed Services Committee, a position he was ‘pushing hard’ for.” The assignment will give Brown, a lieutenant colonel in the Massachusetts National Guard, a “boost” since the committee has jurisdiction over national security spending. The late senator Ted Kennedy, whose seat Brown has filled, was also on the committee. Additionally, Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) will be added to the committee... (more)

They need 216 to pass it. They’ve got that right now in theory, but not in practice: Stupak plus some undetermined number of yeses — 15 to 20, by his count — are voting no this time, which means Madam Speaker needs to flip the same number of no votes the other way. (more)

Come November, Congress will no longer be a “safe house.” We the people are ready to take out the trash. This will not be any simple house cleaning either. The 2010 election needs to be a “scrub the floor with a toothbrush” spit-shine detail to remove the scum that’s been lining the Congressional hallways for too long. The windows of the Capitol building will sparkle because voters must demand crystal-clear transparency. If in doubt, here are some reasons to vote out your US incumbent: (more)

Via the Standard, this was the most buzzed-about moment among righties on Twitter this afternoon, and with good reason. Now that you’ve laughed at the freak-show stuff, settle in for six minutes of Ryan wonking out about what’s destined to happen to the “cost curve” and our annual deficits if The One’s leviathan bill passes. This has always been a core problem of Obama’s health-care pitch: He knows that the moral argument for the bill — sure, it’ll cost us dearly but it’s worth it to insure the uninsured... (more)

fter Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) focused on issues in his wheelhouse -- the dearth of transparency and wealth of special deals in Obamacare -- and chastised Obama for failing to live up to his campaign promises to change the way Washington works and conduct health-care negotiations in front of C-SPAN cameras, the president got testy.
