President Barack Obama broke his months-long silence on the $100 million Islamic center and mosque planned two blocks from ground zero in New York City, which project critics say is offensive to families of those who perished in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The president came out in support of the Cordoba House mosque project. Or ... did he? (more)

Judging by the White House statement after a federal judge struck down California's Proposition 8 on Wednesday, you might think President Obama supports the rights of gays to marry. The president "has spoken out in opposition to Proposition 8 because it is divisive and discriminatory. He will continue to promote equality for LGBT Americans," the White House said. (Post User Poll: Do you agree with the decision?) But Obama does not endorse gay marriage. As a candidate for president, he consist... (more)

How Long Can We Afford Unemployment Benefits?

published 29 days, 2 hours, 1 minute ago posted by govinfogovinfo 31 days, 13 hours, 52 minutes ago
Friday, August 06, 2010 1:18:21 AM GMT Tuesday, August 03, 2010 1:26:55 PM GMT
If the U.S. economy is recovering at all, it's doing so very slowly. Even Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke admits it will take a "significant amount of time" to recover the 8.5 million jobs lost in 2008-2009 alone . With the unemployment rate stuck around 9.5 percent and a $13.3 trillion national debt, how long can the government afford to keep paying out unemployment benefits? In past recessions, how low has the unemployment rate been when Congress finally stopped extending unemployment benefits? (more)

At a cost to taxpayers of $34 billion, Congress has extended federal unemployment benefits through the end of November 2010. Republicans tried to block the last extension, which led President Obama to note that both Democratic and Republican presidents had never hesitated to "offer relief to the unemployed" when needed. Was he correct? (more)

Less than four months after President Obama signed an executive order banning the use of federal money to pay for abortions in the health care reform law, anti-abortion activists and politicians are accusing the president of trying to quietly slip in funding for all legal forms of the procedure, for the first time, in Pennsylvania. Their claims may be persuasive, but are they true? Resident watchdog Tom Murse helps you know the facts. (more)

Climate trial balloon proves explosive - POLITICO.com

The latest trial balloon for passing climate change legislation appears to be just as explosive as the others. Electric utilities are divided over the prospect of a bill that caps their heat-trapping emissions while shunning mandatory limits on transportation and heavy domestic manufacturers, like pulp and paper mills and chemical plants. Environmentalists also are concerned about the prospect of a more limited global warming bill than what they first envisioned, fearful it won’t come anywhere close to... (more)

Another "emergency" and pending "catastrophe" is being used to justify more federal government spending to support unsustainable teachers' union contracts: Education Secretary Arne Duncan says President Obama "absolutely supports" a congressional proposal for $23 billion in emergency education spending in order to stave off teacher layoffs and cancellation of summer classes. Duncan told CNN Wednesday that the emergency spending request is needed to head off "an education catastrophe, "in which as ma... (more)

For a guy from Salon, Jake Tapper has struck me as someone who has been very conscientious as the White House correspondent for ABC News. He usually is trying to be a watchdog, even when his colleagues are content to be lapdogs. That does not make the story coming from his Twitter feed tonight any less odd. Booker Rising: Did Libertarianism Cause Jim Crow?

Rand Paul's comments on libertarians and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 has given some people a chance to blame libertarianism for the Jim Crow segregation which took place throughout the U.S. South. Dennis Sanders, a moderate Republican blogger in Minnesota, argues that state-sponsored racism, not libertarianism, is the culprit: "Now, on the surface, I can see some of my liberal friends nod in agreement. But the fact is, the years of Jim Crow were not the result of libertarianism, but state-sponsored ... (more)

Teacher's Unions: Still a Huge Obstacle to Reform - The Atlantic

It's no secret that I am not fond of the teacher's unions. I get into a lot of arguments about this, in which I am accused of being uninterested in any school reforms that don't involve breaking the power of the teacher's unions. Of course, short of the not-very-successful class size reduction schemes, there aren't many proposed reforms that don't involve breaking the power of the teachers' unions. Exhibit B is Steven Brill's new piece on the teacher's unions in New York, which illustrates just ho... (more)

Senate Votes for Audit of Federal Reserve

Somewhere, Wright Patman is smiling. For much of his 48 years in Congress (1928-1976), Rep. Patman fought in vain to require regular audits of the Federal Reserve System. On May 11, 2010, the U.S. Senate, probably without giving Patman a thought, voted 96-0 to require the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to audit all actions taken by the Federal Reserve in response to the nation's financial crisis. Members of Congress from both parties have pledged to fix the alternative minimum tax (AMT), intended to ensure that the very wealthy paid some federal income taxes when passed decades ago. Congress never indexed the AMT to inflation, and now it threatens to ensnare millions of middle-class earners if reform gets postponed any further. Under a budget plan offered by Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND), that turns from a bug into a feature (more)

Friday, April 23, 2010 11:23:20 AM GMT Thursday, April 22, 2010 11:23:24 AM GMT
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama suggested Wednesday that a new value-added tax on Americans is still on the table, seeming to show more openness to the idea than his aides have expressed in recent days. Before deciding what revenue options are best for dealing with the deficit and the economy, Obama said in an interview with CNBC, "I want to get a better picture of what our options are." After Obama adviser Paul Volcker recently raised the prospect of a value-added tax, or VAT, the Senate ... (more)
