An Examiner item by Glenn Reynolds, linked further down, reminded me that George Bush predicted a "Third Awakening" for America as recently as 2006. There may be a lesson to be learned for Conservatives and Libertarians in a discussion of American awakenings right now. (more)

There are lots of reasons for excluding gays and lesbians from the military. But current supporters of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy insist that really, it all comes down to cohesion. Keep gays out, and soldiers will stick together through thick and thin. Let gays in, and every platoon will disintegrate like a sand castle in the surf. (more)

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, looking toward a future he cannot predict, said the US would not lose its Aaa rating. He told ABC’s “This Week”, when ask if the rating will ever be dropped lower “Absolutely not. And that will never happen to this country.” It is a risky stance for Geithner to take. Moody’s warned that the budget deficit, the growth in the national debt, and slow GDP recovery could cause the agency to consider a downgrade (more)

It's the central question of the health care debate to liberty-loving Americans: Where in the Constitution does our charter of government grant the federal government the power to make us buy health care (or make us buy anything, for that matter)? But to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, it's an illegitimate question. "Are you serious?!" she shot back at a CNSNews.com correspondent Matt Cover. Pelosi is not alone. Her friends in the liberal media also find the question ludicrous. So Media Research Center ... (more)

RIGHT ON— On Sunday the left went bonkers after they discovered that the TelePrompter-less former Governor Sarah Palin wrote notes on the palm of her left hand for her speech to the National Tea Party Convention in Nashville. The far left absolutely freaked over this non-issue rather than focus on her brilliant speech knocking the Obama Administration’s horrid record on economics and national defense. (more)

Moderate Democrats, coping with the electoral fallout of President Barack Obama’s grand and ground-down legislative ambitions, have a message for their leaders: Stop supersizing us. If the first year of Obama’s term was dominated by the so-called Big Bang push for enormous, politically risky initiatives — the stimulus, cap and trade and health care — Year Two is fast shaping up to be year of small ball, retrenchment and backlash. RealClearMarkets - A Federal Budget That Insults All Budgets

published 2 days, 21 hours, 10 minutes ago posted by tsumner1tsumner1 3 days, 21 hours, 44 minutes ago

Condolences. If your faith in politicians as stewards of tax dollars isn't yet dead, it should be. Washington's conduct ridicules anyone who trusted that the stimulus bills and other "temporary" spending increases were designed for economic recovery. Washington's record breaking outlays have had far more to do with rewarding interest groups that contributed to victory in the prior election. (more)
